Imagine this scenario

You come home from work singing a song in your head by a great new artist. It has been a long day but this song is making the journey home faster. You’re feeling energetic and ready to celebrate the weekend. You invite some friends over to hang out and you know your friends will love this new artist—you can’t wait to tell them about that song. You all sit around playing it and sharing music from other artists. You tell them the story of this new artist and why you think they are gonna be the next big thing. You have dinner together and start drinking and laughing and enjoying each other’s company to the comfortable playing of music you love.

What did you visualize in that first paragraph? Did you see yourself in your car with a song on the radio? Or the bus with your ipod on? Did you see yourself following this new artist on Facebook? Instagram? Twitter? Did you see your friends sitting on the couch with their smart phone singing along to the song you just played them after buying it off itunes?

Because what I saw was a little different.

I imagined coming home singing the melody of a clarinet sonata I heard the day before at a concert by an exciting new composer. I bought the sheet music because I knew my friends would love it too and I couldn’t wait to play it for them. I invited my friend who plays piano over and we performed it for our other friends while we all ate food and talked about music and everything happening in our lives.

The scene I imagined took place 200 years ago.

But it shouldn’t have to.

This tradition of classical chamber music began exactly in this way as people invited friends into their homes for great music, food, and company in their own chambers. They talked about art they loved and spent time with friends. And it is a tradition people still enjoy today. But for some reason, not often with classical music–and least often in professional classical concerts.

Chamber Music with Friends wants to change that.

We embody this fun and inviting nature by welcoming everyone involved in the show together as friends. We embrace the idea that the artists performing should be friends excited to play with each other and that they should be friends with the audience with whom they cant wait to share a great  show.

How do we make our shows friendly and unique?

First, we remind our audience members that they are part of the party! The friendships between our performers and our audience members are just as important as our performer collaborations.

We want to get to know everyone in our audience and have you get to know us—as Friends! We will talk to you from the stage about everything we create. Our performers are always around for intermissions and after concerts to talk to you about the performance, our future projects, our costumes, our coffee, our thoughts on art, or anything else you want to know! Audiences are people who like art, just like performers. And we couldn’t put on a show without you.

Then we take our Friendships even further and extend the invitation not just to musicians but all artists. We foster new friendships and collaborations between musicians, visual artists, performers, and more from our already vibrant and diverse arts groups for new and unique experiences. With all of these organizations bringing us amazing shows on their own, we can’t wait to see what they do when they combine their efforts.

What should you expect at our concerts?

Everything

We have our first few collaborations ready to go, but the most exciting part of Chamber Music with Friends is that we welcome ALL artists to the stage—so anything is possible. Classical, folk, jazz, and rock musicians, actors, comedians, dancers, painters, sculptors, lighting technicians, puppeteers, graphic designers. All these artists have something to say, and we want to say it with them.

Just know that when we embark on these collaborative adventures, we want you right there with us, sharing in the process and the performance. We can’t wait to tell you about our collaborations and introduce you to what we make.

And we can’t wait to call you Friend.
